Pub Trivia with the Young Actuaries

Who were the last 3 Queensland Premiers with names ending in 'N'?

Fortunately, that is not the opening question to any actuarial exam, but it was one of the 40 questions posed to the young actuaries in attendance at the recent Young Actuaries Program NSW (YAP NSW) pub trivia event.

On Wednesday, 12 April 2023, two dozen young actuaries descended on the Australian Heritage Hotel in Sydney's The Rocks for the regular Wednesday evening pub trivia. Split into three teams and equipped with ample food, the groups enthusiastically responded to the trivia questions with mixed success.

Questions in the quiz extended from music, to politics, to geography - proving the range of knowledge each team had. While some participants showed their expertise in identifying the opening of "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again" by The Angels, naming the 6 Portuguese-speaking African countries (Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Equatorial Guinea) proved an Achilles heel for others. The diversity of knowledge at each table assisted the teams greatly and resulted in one team placing 5^th overall and another team winning a question in the "Oi" round.

As the first event of the YAP NSW 2023 calendar, the night was a great opportunity to connect with the familiar names and fresh faces in the young actuaries NSW community (regardless of trivia performance). We are looking forward to seeing many more faces at the upcoming events later in the year.

Throughout the year, the Young Actuaries Advisory Board (YAAB) and YAP committees in each state hold many events targeted at building the knowledge and networks of young actuaries. Young actuaries are classified as those members under 35 or with less than 15 years' experience in the profession. So if that is you, we would love to have you involved!
